Lose sight of the shore...

Man cannot discover new oceans until he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.
--- Andre Gide ---

This has been a favorite quote of mine for so long.  I love the ocean and all things sea-related, but beyond that reference, this quote is about courage, and a reminder to push through that nervous excitement when embarking upon a new path.

On a personal note, I think that this quote has touched me and my impulse to embark on my own international travels and adventures abroad over the years.  From adventures in SE Asia to South America and backpacking in Europe, I've found comfort in discovering new lands and cultures and finding out more about myself than I ever could have just sitting still.  In January 2011, I will be off to take my courage and discover new worlds once again (within myself and others).  May you find courage to discover your own new interests too!

My friend...

My friend, if I could give you one thing, it would be the ability to see yourself as others see you.  Then you would realize what a truly special person you are.

When I dare to be powerful...

"When I dare to be powerful - to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid."
--- Audre Lorde ---

This is another favorite quote which happens to be in a large framed photograph right above my computer at work.   When I first started at the job, I didn't know what impact this quote would have on my work and my personal capacity for action, but I often find myself glancing up at this big poster, seeing her face with her arms in the air, and thinking about how I can dissipate my own fears in life.  I have also heard this particular quote mentioned time and time again at a workshop that our department hosts each year on the 'imposter syndrome.'  This quote is a reminder not to let your fears stand in the way of what you want to do, and emphasizes how important it is to identify and develop a strong vision for our own lives.  Audre Lorde was a powerful poet/activist whose words demonstrate a wisdom beyond what is written on paper.  Enjoy!
